The Postal Service's Union-Busting Law Firm
With negotiations for a new contract set to begin on Feb. 19, 2015, it’s worth noting that in the past, when talks have ended in arbitration, the #USPS has used the anti-union law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius to represent management’s interests.
The firm, which has more than 1,400 attorneys in 25 offices, is considered one of the leading #union-busting law firms in the country.
It has a long history fighting workers. When former President Ronald Reagan fired striking Air Traffic Controllers in 1981, Morgan Lewis served as the FAA’s (Federal Aviation Administration) attorneys. The strike was a major defeat for labor; PATCO, the Professional Air Traffic Controllers union, was disbanded soon after.

Eagle Rock, MO postmaster facing federal charges for alleged robbery plot
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – David M. Ketchmark, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that the Eagle Rock, Mo., Postmaster was charged in federal court today in connection with conspiring to rob or burglarize a convenience store. Michael Joe Stubblefield, 48, of Cassville, Mo., was charged by complaint with conspiring to interfere with interstate commerce by threats or violence in connection with planning an alleged robbery of Uncle Roy’s convenience store in Eagle Rock. According to an affidavit supporting the complaint, on multiple occasions, Stubblefield met with confidential informants, who were cooperating with law enforcement, for the purpose of coordinating a staged robbery or burglary at Uncle Roy’s Convenience Store by utilizing an employee’s access information to gain entry after the store was closed. When that employee was terminated from the store, the affidavit states, Stubblefield abandoned the plan of a staged robbery and turned his attention toward a possible take-over robbery. Ketchmark cautioned that the charges contained in the complaint and affidavit are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence. This case is being prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Oliver and Assistant U.S. Attorney James Kelleher. It was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Postal Service– Office of Inspector General, and the Barry County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department.

UPS Does Not Necessarily Win If The Postal Service Fails
UPS Does Not Necessarily Win If The Postal Service Fails
If the Postal Service does fall, then it could have dramatic effects on many small businesses. Currently one of the largest generators of income for the Postal Service is what is commonly referred to as "junk mail". These advertising companies provide so much of this mail because it has such a huge profit margin for them. Although many people simply throw their junk mail in the garbage without looking at it, there are apparently enough people making purchases to make this method of advertising effective and important. If the Postal Service fails, then these companies will have few other options. Although they could turn to UPS, the prices that are offered by the company would be too high for these advertisers to make money. That means that many of these companies could simply die off. That means less mail for the typical person, but it also means the loss of more jobs and companies.

Businessweek: The U.S. Postal Service Nears Collapse
Businessweek: The U.S. Postal Service Nears Collapse - Phillip Herr looks like many of the men who toil deep within the federal government. He wears blue suits. He keeps his graying hair and mustache neatly trimmed. He has an inoffensively earnest manner. He also has heavy bags under his eyes, which testify to the long hours he spends scrutinizing federal spending for the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the congressional watchdog agency where he is Director of Physical Infrastructure Issues. As his title suggests, Herr devotes much of his time to highway programs. But for the past three years he has been diagnosing what ails the U.S. Postal Service.
