UPS Does Not Necessarily Win If The Postal Service Fails
UPS Does Not Necessarily Win If The Postal Service Fails
If the Postal Service does fall, then it could have dramatic effects on many small businesses. Currently one of the largest generators of income for the Postal Service is what is commonly referred to as "junk mail". These advertising companies provide so much of this mail because it has such a huge profit margin for them. Although many people simply throw their junk mail in the garbage without looking at it, there are apparently enough people making purchases to make this method of advertising effective and important. If the Postal Service fails, then these companies will have few other options. Although they could turn to UPS, the prices that are offered by the company would be too high for these advertisers to make money. That means that many of these companies could simply die off. That means less mail for the typical person, but it also means the loss of more jobs and companies.

Competitors Circle as Postal Service Considers Service Cutbacks
Competitors Circle as Postal Service Considers Service Cutbacks - In a recent conference call discussing his company’s performance, Kurt Kuehn, Chief Financial Officer of United Parcel Service (UPS), said the proposed closing of about 3,600 post offices could benefit the Postal Service’s chief competitor.
“I think any time a competitor pulls back capacity and access, it’s an opportunity,” Keuhn said. “So clearly, we will look at the gaps that are there, and we’ve got a wonderful footprint with the UPS Store and offering consumers and small businesses good access.”
If UPS sees filling the gap left by reduced service as an opportunity to make money, can’t the Postal Service find a way?

Businessweek: The U.S. Postal Service Nears Collapse - Phillip Herr looks like many of the men who toil deep within the federal government. He wears blue suits. He keeps his graying hair and mustache neatly trimmed. He has an inoffensively earnest manner. He also has heavy bags under his eyes, which testify to the long hours he spends scrutinizing federal spending for the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the congressional watchdog agency where he is Director of Physical Infrastructure Issues. As his title suggests, Herr devotes much of his time to highway programs. But for the past three years he has been diagnosing what ails the U.S. Postal Service.

Ex-President Burrus Attacks APWU Tentative Contract : PostalReporter News BlogThis tentative agreement will turn back the clock and erase those years of struggle.
Notwithstanding the rationalization, if this contract is ratified, future employees will suffer reductions in pay of more than $300 per pay, more than $600 per month and over $8,000 per year. Over a 30 year career these losses will exceed more than $250,000 and will continue into retirement, when the annuity includes the salary reductions. In total, each employee hired after the date of this contract will receive over $300,000 less for performing the same work. Can you imagine why postal management would agree to non economic changes if they can succeed in lowering wages in this amount? The result will be over $1.5 billion per year transferred from the pay of APWU employees to USPS future health care cost, supervisor bonuses or any other expenditure that management chooses

Postal Service 'AMPs' Up Facility Consolidations
Dead Tree Edition: Postal Service 'AMPs' Up Facility Consolidations
"In the past seven days, the U.S. Postal Service has announced it is considering the closing or downsizing of seven distribution centers as it steps up efforts to shrink its mail-processing network. The latest announcements mean that more than 15% of the country's approximately 260 processing and distribution centers are the subject of Area Mail Processing studies, which can lead to work being shifted to facilities in other cities. While the media pay attention to the recent announcement that 2,000 small post offices might close, the less publicized AMPS process could be equally significant for the USPS's workforce, cost savings, and customers."

When it comes to mail delivery, don't leave rural America behind
McCook Daily Gazette: Column: McCook Daily Gazette: When it comes to mail delivery, don't leave rural America behind: "Changing times and technology are catching up with the U.S. Postal Service, as e-mail, online bill pay and other electronic services take over for 'snail mail.'
New Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe, who was sworn into office earlier this month, wants to cut 7,500 administrative jobs through attrition, including those of postmasters.
He has a problem. The postal service, which is set up to be self-supporting, forecasts a $6.4 billion loss for its 2011 fiscal year, which ends in September.
'Eighty percent of our offices don't cover our costs, and the law prevents us from closing those,' said spokeswoman Sue Brennan. 'But we're looking for ways to cut costs.
As a sign of the times, the Postal Service's application for Apple Inc.'s iPhone is the number one free business app, and more and more of us are buying postage online or at alternate sites.
Some post offices in rural areas are staffed solely by a postmaster, costing perhaps $90,000 to operate while bringing in $10,000 in revenue."

Post Office plans to deliver on Wednesday; not so with UPS, FedEx: "The US Postal Service will try to live up to its honor code, 'Neither snow, or rain, or sleet, or dark of night, will keep us from our appointed rounds,' by delivering the mail on Wednesday.
It might be later than usual, but a spokesperson at the US Postal Service main post office on Milwaukee Street said they hope to get mail delivery trucks out on Madison's streets by noon.
For Federal Express and UPS customers, you'll most likely have to wait an extra day for that package.
The UPS distribution center in Middleton is shut down due to the blizzard, so no UPS deliveries will be made.
At FedEx, no planes were able to land at Dane County Regional Airport overnight, so there won't be ground delivery service today."

Tennessee mail carrier under investigation for theft of VA mail
Marshall County and federal law enforcement officers are investigating what appears to be theft of medicine mailed by a Veterans Administration pharmacy to a patient who's a resident along a Petersburg mail route.
"The search warrant pertained to the theft of mail," Sheriff Norman Dalton said in a prepared statement issued Tuesday morning, some 12 hours after Chancellor J.B. Cox signed the warrant. "It is not known whether charges will be brought ... by the Eastern U.S. District Court [in Chattanooga] or whether there will be state charges."
"Apparently the Postal Service received complaints over time that things were missing from the mail, medicine being mailed to the VA patient," Bragg said.
"They got a box [of medicine that was to be mailed] and treated the box with clue spray. It's invisible but under fluorescent light, it fluoresces," the experienced detective said. "Apparently, they contacted the person who was to receive the package asking that he contact them when it was delivered.
When it was, "they inspected it and determined that it had been tampered with," Bragg continued. "It was found to have been opened and there was a substitution made."
Shortly thereafter, "They traffic stopped him," Bragg said of Michael Murdock, the letter carrier who delivers from the Post Office on the Petersburg public square. "After he was stopped and they identified themselves as federal agents... he and his vehicle ended up in Petersburg" at the Post Office.
